What is it?
-
Panopto is a program that records video and/or your screen, as well as upload videos to present to students. Panopto also has an online website component where you can edit and share your videos. Videos can be saved locally and online.

-
How can I teach with it?
-
Students will need access to a web browser, and Panopto can be integrated with learning platforms such as Moodle. Panopto can be used to teach remotely via posting asynchronous videos or streaming synchronously. You can record using your webcam or by connecting an external camera and/or record your screen. You can also integrate Powerpoint slides in your presentation, and Panopto will create a table of contents based on the title of the slides, which can help students see an outline of your video and jump to specific points in the video.
-
After recording your video, you can add features to your video to aid with your teaching, such as embedding a Youtube video, add quizzes, etc.
-
You can also check stats for each video to see which students have watched your video and how engaged they are. Stats include who has watched your video, how many minutes did they watch, students' responses to quizzes, etc.
-
-
Is it good for learning?
-
At the most basic level, students can simply watch your video, however, you can add more features to help them learn more actively. For example, you can add quizzes at any point in your video to check students' understanding. Panopto also lets students take their own notes and make their own bookmarks on each video (if you give permission for it for the video).
-
Pros:
-
Great basic features to record and edit videos
-
Ability to incorporate Powerpoint slides is super convenient
-
Additional features that are helpful for students that enhance teaching rather than inhibit it
Cons:
-
Online editor sometimes slows down if too many features are used at once or if the video is longer (such as 15 minutes or longer)
-
Support is only available in the Pro and Enterprise plans, and sharing capabilities are limited in the free version
-
Can be intimidating if have no or little video editing experience
Bottom Line: Panopto has useful learning features to help students get the most out of your teaching. While it is fairly intuitive for teachers, to get the most out of all the features, teachers should invest the time to learn how to use all of the features effectively.
